Why do new contacts initially sort opposite to what I've set ?

In Outlook XP I've set the sort order in both the Contact options area
and the address book options to be Last Name first.

Now, if I create a new Contact and instead of typing the FullName
button start typing a regular name like Bill Frisell, it will
interpret that as Bill, Frisell. When I go into Full Name, it indeed
put the "Bill" in Last name and the "Frisell" in the first name
fields. After saving it will keep it this way. Changing the File As
order won't change the way the Full Name is actually being recorded.

Is there a way to input a name in the Full name field without clicking
the Full name button, and have it sort Last Name first, yet keep the
Full name in the format of First Name Last name?

thanks

Clarify your post. The option you claim to have set as your "sort order"
does not even exist anywhere. Clarify also the options you have set for the
Full Name and File As... fields. That's what's in play here.

Tools > options > Contact Options button: Last First for 1st field and
Last, First for 2nd.

Mail Setup > Email Accounts > Directory:View or change exisiting
directories or address books > change button > file as Smith, John

Your aren't setting the sort order then. You are setting the format of the
fields. Outlook is doing what you've told it to. If you don't want the Full
Name reversed then don't set it to Last, First. Set it to First Last or
parse the name elements directly yourself.

The Outlook Address Book will sort by Last, First only if you've set the
File As... field to Last, First. Works for everyone else.

I see so I have to enter the name Last, First if I want it to remain
sorted Last, First.

thanks for clearing up
