Why do my pictures not display in PowerPoint normal View?

I need to have several slides that have a picture, and then place text on top
of the picture. The pictures are 1048 x 768 res JPEG, and the text should be
in front of them.

I want to place the text on top of the picture (and possibly add arrows to
the pictures)

The problem is the sidebar shows the picture, as does the presentation,
however the "Normal" view only show an outline of the picture, making it
really difficult to resize, crop, or place other items on top (like circles,
or arrows)

I can't find this is settings, or options, and searching here has not
provided me a solution.
Any ideas?

Are you up to date with service packs?? If not this is likely to solve the
problem

If you have XP ppt then" help > about microsoft ppt"should show sp3 and for
ppt 2003 sp2
