Why do my emails display command fonts as I type?

A few days ago I switched the email stationary. Thing is, it didn't switch to
the new stationary rather Outlook now displays command fonts (not sure that's
the correct term) like the paragraph sign, a dot between sentences, the enter
arrow. These appear as I'm typing, however, once the email is sent they are
no longer visible. These fonts are very distracting. Can someone please help
me?
