Why do my attachments get converted to winmail.dat?

When I send emails to certain people with attachments (particularly Excel &
Word), the attachment is received as winmail.dat which they cannot open.
What is causing this? I am using Outlook out of Office 2000.

Stop using Outlook Rich Text Format. Use HTML or plain text, plain text
being preferred.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
