why do letters appear when I open a new document?

When I open MS Word 2002 on my computer the following characters appear in
the upper left hand corner of the new document
"sshsfghsfgjsfgjsfgsfgsfgsfgfgf". They also show when I start a new email.
How do I get these letters to stop ppearing on my computer at the time of
starting up the Word program?

I run on a Vista ultimate platform.
