Why do I not have an attachment field in my message header?

Using Office XP, Outlook 2002 SP

When I create a new message and attach a file, it inserts the icon for the
file in the message body instead of adding an attachment field in the message
header.

How do I change this?

Stop composing in Rich Text format. Use either plain text or HTML.
