Every day, norton tells me that it has detected and
deleted at least 100 files that it claims were viruses.
How are they getting in? I have Zone Alarm fire wall too.
How can I stop them?

Have you ran a full manual scan with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus AFTER
updating the virus definitions?
Have you turned off Windows XP System Restore, Rebooted, Reran your Full
System scan for viruses and then (only then) turned back on the system
restore and made a manual restoration point?

Other general suggestions:

You may have spyware/adware infesting your machine, follow the
appropriate section for that, making sure you use at least
THREE of the tools I list to scan and clean your machine AFTER
updating them. Cleaning up spyware/adware/malware usually
solves home page hijackers as well.

Make sure you have all the updates (critical) installed from:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
(Scan for updates, Review and Install)

Get rid of the spy/ad/mal-ware..
(Yes - using MORE than one of these..
I recommend at least the first three. Also..
UPDATE the definitions for them before using.)

Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.net/

Lavasoft AdAware
http://www.lavasoft.de

CWSShredder
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Hijack This!

I also like "The Cleaner" and "SpywareBlaster" and "SpywareGuard".

The first is a PAY product, but useable for 30 days - it has found and
eliminated problems in the past the others did not. The latter two are
prevention mechanisms. I like SpywareGuard for those with enough processor
to have something running like antivirus software - and it prevents browser
hijacking quite well. SpywareBlaster is a FANTASTIC free product, I suggest
getting this after you cleanup and keeping it updated as well....

And Assortment of Others:

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and shrink the size it stores to about
80 to 120MB (seems to be an optimal size for the normal user)

- Open ONE copy of Internet Explorer.
- Select TOOLS -> Internet Options.
- Under the General tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section,
do the following:
- Click on "Delete Cookies" (click OK)
- Click on "Settings" and change the
"Amount of disk space to use:" to something between 80MB
and 120MB. (Betting it is MUCH larger right now.)
- Click OK.
- Click on "Delete Files" and select to
"Delete all offline contents" (the checkbox) and click
OK. (If you had a LOT, this could take 2-10 minutes or
more.)
- Once it is done, click OK, close Internet Explorer
- Re-open Internet Explorer.

Uninstall any software you do not use often/ever. (If you have something
installed but never use it, uninstall it.) If you go through Control
Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and see things you seldom if ever use, it is to
your advantage to remove it.

Also, if you are tired of Web Page Pop-Ups/Unders.. You could try the
Google Toolbar.
http://toolbar.google.com/

Stop loading applications at logon.. run MSCONFIG and look under the startup
tab for things you DON'T want to startup! Search the Internet with Google
to discover what things are safe to remove and what things may even be
malware infecting your computer.

Better control your email and lessen the amount of time you spend dealing
with SPAM:
SpamBayes
http://sourceforge.net/projects/spambayes/
or
Spamihilator.

Hope that helps...

get norton antiviurs and update it every week and try to scan ur computer once in a month
no virus will infect ur system :)

One minor addition, did u turn on virus scan for incoming emails?

If not, system will be infected if some spam are infected.

I do now, but they keep coming through. Also, how do I
get rid of the norton messages that come up when they find
a virus. Like I said, norton finds over 100 every few days

Norton (or any other antivirus application) only removes
infected files. However, many modern viruses come with
self-regenerating files, that can't be picked up during
scans. Also, there is always a chance of network virus
distribution .

1. Update your Virus Definitions
2. Scan your box and remove all infection. If can't
remove everything in Normal Mode, restart in Safe Mode.
3. Get a list of all viruses (not files, but Virus
Names) that you removed, and find specific removal
information on each:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html#
threat_list
4. Follow the specific removal instructions and make
sure there is no infection/dormant infection
5. Rescan you box
6. Get spyware removal tools:
7. http://spybot.safer-networking.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
and use them.

Good Luck!

P.S. ZoneAlarm is a very good program, but it needs to be
configured properly. And it is not an antivirus, even
though it has an option to block some
potentially "dangerous" e-mail attachments

----------------------------------------------

update virus definitions daily..... too many variations as
of late coming out daily....
and don't open email attachments ,even from people you
know......teach your friends the tried and true, copy and
paste the message or picture to the body of the email....

Not necessary.

From Frank Saunders MVP:-

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that
OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton
and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:
From
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...nDocument&src=tr&Highlight=0,email,protection

"Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and
malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection in
addition to Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files,
including
email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your
virus
definitions up to date with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled
and
set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is
fully
protected."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment.

Without knowing which viruses you are getting no one can help you. There
are so many different viruses and they do different things. Have you
bothered to look any of them up on the Symantec site and see if there
are specific removal instructions or tools for them?
