Why do I get garbled items in my incoming email messages

Why do I get garbled characters contained in inbound messages?

Examples are:  Of all the gifts you could give our U.S. Military,
Prayer is the very best one!ÂÂ
           God will Love You for helping

Spread His Word.ÂÂ
