Why do deleted emails from Inbox not show in Deleted Items?

I have 1600 items in my Deleted Items folder, ranging in date up to February
2007. Since that date none of the items, from any folder, that I delete shows
in my Deleted Items folder. Why is this? I need to keep recent emails for a
period of time, but as I cannot see them I'm not sure whether they're
available to me. I have no filter on any folders.

Clean your Deleted Items Folder and then scan your pst-files for errors with
scanpst.exe. Now see if newly deleted items are being retained.
