Why do avi files created in PPT-XP not play in PPT-2003?

I have created an avi file in a powerpoint presentation using Office XP
(Powerpoint 2002). As we have both Office XP and Office 2003 in our office, I
tried to view the presentation on a machine that uses Office 2003. The
presentation worked fine, however, on the slide that contained the avi the
video did not play and only a black box appeared. It looks like there is some
compatibility issue between the Powerpoint XP and the Powerpoint 2003. Is
there a fix for this, or is there another way I should be creating the avi
files in the Powerpoint XP so that they play on Powerpoint 2003?

Chances are you are either missing something on the PC or have installed
something that is taking over the avi functionality (see my previous
posts). Take Sonia's and the others advise and go through all of the
information provided.

I was running into the same problem, and it had nothing to do with which
version of PowerPoint I was running but was infact linked to software
that had been shipped on the laptop I was attempting to run the
presentation with avis on.
