why did symbol disappear from insert menu?

In Word 97, I hit Control+Alt+Num- and my cursor changed and "Symbol"
disappeared from the "Insert" drop-down menu. Closing Word and re-opening it
restored the cursor, but how do I restore "Symbol"?

CTRL+ALT+NUM- is a keyboard shortcut to insert a symbol as is (r) which will
insert an r with a circle around it to represent registered trademark to see
all of the associated shortcuts that insert symbols go to Insert Symbols on
your menu bar when the Symbols dialog box appears click the second tab which
is Special Characters and it will tell you all the shortcuts associated with
commonly used symbols.
