Why did I pay all that money to wind up with Vista?

Enough of Vista

I cannot believe what a mess your operating system is. I can't even open
attachments received in my emails because your silly system is so poorly
designed. I think it may be time to scrap my new HP system and go out an buy
a real computer from Apple. If Bill Gates had to compensate Windows users for
all the time wasted dealing with his damned OSs, he would for sure not be the
world's richest man, and deservedly so. I'm fed up. Eric Schaal

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly; cf.

It could be your anti-virus solution which is preventing attachments from
being opened.

Does the same apply to all attachments or is it specific to certain formats?

No.
AV programs are not a part of the game with the IE8-WinMail bug.
Certainly!

formats?

In its basic variation the bug affects *all* kinds of file types.
The problem can be reduced to JPG and TXT files by editing the shortcut
used for launching WinMail.
But when a system is affected, the bug will certainly be appearing with
the latter types if attachments.

P.S. We have been suffering from this most serious bug for many months
(since IE8 appeared) - without any reaction from the side of MS
{siiiiigh}.
Would you as an MVP see any channels for making MS aware of the
problem??

Is there a way that I can save my setting for font size, color, etc. and
have automatic grammar, spell check etc?

Thanks,

Mark

Spell check, yes; grammar check, no.

You may want to look into Stationery if you need to save font and color selections.
