Why can't I type a forward slash in a cell?

I have been trying to figure out why I can not type a forward slash only in a cell in Excel unless I first double click the cell or preface it with an apostrophe. Why does excel not allow you to simply type a forward slash in a cell?

It does in XLv.X.

What happens when you try? Do you have an autocorrect entry for forward
slash?

What happens when you type the / in the cell?

Help pops up?

Check Tools>Options>Transition "Excel menu or help key" and clear if it has a
/ entered.

For me, it takes focus to the Menu bar.

If you look at:
Tools->Option->Transition, you'll see the
reference to navigation and the old Lotus-123
way of getting the menu.

Tried it on my XL 2000.
The slash (/) behaves pretty well like a disconnected Alt key.

ALT + o gets the format menu.

/ followed by (not coupled with) o gives format etc.

I never knew that! Could be useful when on the phone and coping wit
one hand, if nothing else.
