Perhaps read a book on the basics of Excel?
I suggest you purchase Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (or whatever version you
have) Step by Step.
By Curtis D. Frye. Published by Microsoft Press. $24.99 U.S.
Then follow that with Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (or whatever version you
have) Bible.
By John Walkenbach. Published by Wiley Publishing Inc. $39.99 U.S.

One or both of the cells contains text string?

You don't know how?

Show us what you have attempted to date.

I just use =cell1-cell2

If either or both the cells contain a negative you have to add, not subtract.
