Why can't I (sometimes) see the files in my site?

I've got an intermittent problem. Every once in a while (maybe every 2 or 3
months), my website's files won't be visible from within FrontPage dialog
boxes, even though all the folders and pages are visible in the folder view
on the left. For instance, if I want to create a hyperlink in a page, I
click the hyperlink icon, and a dialog box pops up. Normally, I can just
highlight and click the page I want the text to link to, but when this
problem is happening, no pages show up in the dialog bax, so I have to type
the name of the page manually. This also happens if I want to "insert" a
picture from my images folder: When I do the "insert" routine, and the dialog
box pops up, I can't see any files or folders. This probably often lasts
weeks, sometimes months, and then seems to go away by itself. I've been
using FrontPage every day ever since 98, so I'm not a newbie.

Appears to be an intermittent problem w/ web folders
- I have also seen it

The below is Not verified to work in all cases, but try the below steps when it happens

In Windows Explorer Find and delete the hidden *.web web cache files for the local and remote webs you are having the problems with
(or delete all *.web)
( Usually in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache )

1) Open your FP web using File Open site and browsing to Network Places for your site
2) Select the site (double click the site in Network Places) but Do Not Open it
This will get you the File selection dialog (where you can't probably can't see any of the folders or subwebs in the site)
3) On the same line as "Look In" you will see a series of Icons, Select the Folder Icon for Created New Folder (or use [Alt][5])
(Make sure the New Folder Dialog has Documents selected under: Folder Contains)
4) Enter a folder name (that you are sure is not in your current web - say: fixit) and OK
5) Use the Up One Folder Icon, or [Alt][2], and select Open (your root web)
(your web folders should have shown you all your folders including the newly created one)
6) Run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
7) Open a page, select some text, and try to insert a Hyperlink to see if your web folder view is repaired (if your web is not
displayed in Look In, browse to it under Network Places)
(Delete the new folder created above)

Alternatively:
1) Open your FP web using File Open site and typing in the URL as http://www.yoursite.com/ (or use File Recent Sites)
2) Open a new (or existing page) at the Root level and select an insertion point on the page
3) Use Insert - Picture - From File
This will get you the File selection dialog (where you probably can't see anything now but the open page listed)
4) On the same line as "Look In" you will see a series of Icons. Select the Folder Icon for Created New Folder (or use [Alt][5])
(Make sure if shown the New Folder Dialog has Documents selected under: Folder Contains)
5) Enter a folder name (that you are sure is not in your current web - say: fixit) and OK
6) Use the Up One Folder Icon, or [Alt][2], and see if your web folders are repaired
7) Cancel the dialog and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks, then try inserting a hyperlink or picture from file
(Delete the new folder created above)

Please post back if either of the above cures the web folders problem

Many thanks for your help, Stefan, but I'm afraid I couldn't do what you
suggested, because when I'm having this problem with a website, the Windows
Explorer view of sites in My Network Places doesn't work. With my other
sites, as soon as I put the cursor on the site, the sign-in dialog box
appears. When I'm having this problem, nothing happens, and nothing is
visible. I guess as a result of no files being open, the functions you
suggest also aren't possible. For instance, there is no Look In option, and
no File Open option. I did delete the cache files in the web server
extensions folder, but that didn't make a difference by itself. Maybe the
fact that the files don't appear in Windows Explorer suggests the nature of
the problem? Thanks again. - Storm

Reread the steps
- It does not say to go to network places in Windows Explorer
Or try the alternate method

As I indicated this approach does not work for all users

My apologies, Stefan. Very sloppy of me.

However, I just tried both techniques, but couldn't follow all of them all
the way through. With the first one, I wasn't able to hit Open when I went
up to the top level. I had to switch to Open Site, rather than Open File,
which is (I believe) what you wanted me to be in.

With the alternate approach, the problem was that it wouldn't let me create
a new folder. It told me I didn't have permission to access that web folder
location. I've never had trouble creating a new folder before, at any level.
Also, when I hit Insert Picture to get the dialog box, it didn't default to
my Images folder, as it normally does, but went straight to the top level.
Thus, I wasn't able to hit the Up One Level icon.

Thanks for all your time and assistance! - Storm
