Why can't I scroll when in a cmd.exe window, but can with a command.exe window?

I'm running Windows XP Home on my notebook and when I open a cmd.exe
console window and cause text to run down too long for to see in the
window, I do not have a scroll bar on the right to allow me to scroll
up to see the rest of the text. With the command.exe console, I do
have the capability to scroll. My roommate also has XP Home on his
desktop and when he uses a cmd.exe console window, he can scroll. Why
can he scroll and I can't? Thanks.

I think you're getting it partly backwards. Command.COM is the old DOS
command line shell. It does not know how to do window scrolling. You'll
notice that if you try to close the "window" with the close button ("X") you
get an error message - the proper way is to use the command "exit". cmd.EXE
is the command line shell that comes with the 32 bit Windows, it is
scrollable and very configurable.

I looked at the "Properties" and found that the buffer size (whichis
50) and the number of buffers (which is 4) and both of these are the
same as my roommate's. I can't figure out why mine doesn't have a
scroll bar. I checked all the Properties settings and they're exactly
the same. If I click in the top left of the cmd.exe window and go
down to "Edit", my "Scroll" menu option there is grayed out as well.
Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Wrong buffer, you want screen buffer not command history buffer. Layout tab.

No. I promise. When I run cmd.exe, there is no scroll bar. When I
run command.exe, there is a scroll bar. I don't know why it's
backwards like that, but it is. And what you said makes absolute
sense. I just don't know why mine is backwards. I did some
searching, but couldn't find any information on this. Crazy, huh?
Any other ideas? Thanks.
