I can send tasks to others but these cannot be opened (can be viewed in the
preview pane, but cannot be accepted or rejected). tasks are sent via the
standard task request form over the internet from OLK03 to OLK03.

Diane,
Thanks for replying.
Language is American English, OS is XP pro SP2. Outlook is 11.8002.6568 SP2,
updated with KB892843.

it's a recent update. it only affects some people though, not everyone with
the update installed.

what os is on the machine that can't open them?
what language is Office and your os?

Are you sure? Do you know when it started? Removing that patch seems to fix
it for everyone affected, but when Sue and I tried to repro it, we couldn't,
which is why I asked for the additional information. It's possible that it
takes two different patches to cause it and the second one was installed
after this one.

My suggestion: create a restore point and try it. Report back whether it
works or not. If you can identify a patch that was installed after it and
right before the problem started, let us know.

Diane,
This fixed the problem - sort of. I can now send and recieve tasks (2
computers exhibiting this problem) after removing KB892843, but when manchine
B assigns a task to machine (A) and status is reported back to B, the only A
will send is "completed", (not "in progress") AND although B gets an email
showing the assigned task is complete the task is not updated (on B) showing
that it is completed.

Everything works as it should when tasks are assigned from A and status
reported back from B.

Sounds like 2 problems, one on each machine.

Best,
Larry

Cade,
Thanks, but the problem pre-dates KB892843. Remove it anyway?

I finally bit the bullett and rang microsoft about this. Much discussion with
Tech Support (at no cost to me as they seemed to accept it wasn't a user
problem) reveled two items of note:

1. MS had no idea this problem existed as it appeared no-one had reported
it. They are now aware of the problem and I told them to referr to these
discussion groups if they didnt believe me or thought I was the only person
with this problem.

2. The tech I spoke to did acknowledge it was a serious problem and
undertook to send the reference up the line for the developers to look at.

They did not reccommend uninstalling any security updates. This would leave
systems vulnerable and it appears from the lates posts that more recent
updates may also be causing problems (is this latest one a cumilative
update?).

I would urge erveryone with this problem to contact MS tech support ASAP and
notify them of this problem. At the time I called they had not heard of this
issue at all (I can't believ that there is no-one in MS that monitors the
groups for this sort of thing). Until they realise how big and widespread the
problem is, I doubt they will give it the attention it requires.

Same problem here. I also experienced this issue with updates KB913807
OLKINTLff and KB913807 OUTLOOKff. When I remove them, the Task feature in
Outlook allows me to open tasks. But I still have the problem described
below concerning the update feature between two computers.

I hope this issue is fixed soon because it is causing us problems everyday.

I too can confirm this issue exists. The assigned task shows up in the
mailbox, you double-click on it, and nothing happens. All updates are
applied

We've been looking for software for my department for a while. I was using
the "Tasks" feature of Outlook which worked well but wasn't robust enough.
We find MS Project purchase and install it, along with MS Office 2003 and all
the updates that MS Project needs to run. Apparently it was all a waste of
time. I can no longer use "Tasks" in Outlook 2003, they will not open when I
recieve them, and can not be dragged into the task folder. The big draw to
MS Project was the fact that it would import the tasks, which it will not do
correctly. I've recommended to the company to return our MS software until
they can get passed this long over due problem. The waste of time makes me
want to scream. I do this for a living, taking on tasks, not screaming.
Although since we wasted money and many hours of time that could have been
used for productive purposes I probably scream more. MS killed 2 birds with
one shot. I'm back to paper requests now. Thanks.

Microsoft have responded to my complaint and given me some homework to do and
report back on. Again, it would pay for anyone affected to notify Microsoft.

Thank you DMF, that might come in useful.

I've read all the posts on this and have good news. Having already resigned
myself to deleting the offending update and waiting for MS to release the
real fix before updating Office I took one of the responders advise and
contacted MS just to let them know there are more folks suffering the same
fate.

Much to my surprise they had a solution. There is a hotfix that works for
me: Solution: Install Hotfix KB915490. The hotfix is not publically availabe
becasue MS hasn't finished testing it. If you are interested contact MS
again. I was working with Maggie Guo (CS&S) [[email protected]]. The
hotfix will be placed in a password protected file so you need to request it
to get it.

Good Luck.
