Why can't I open files in same window instead of multiple?

I have microsoft word 2000. I thought this program would open files in the
same window and could switch between them without having to open another
window. It is not doing this. How can I make it do this. I often have at
least between 3 to 5 word documents going at the same time and can't stand to
have the taskbar filled with all those windows when it isn't necessary. What
can I do? Thank you. Jimmy
