If may be that it's an Excel 2007 file, and your Excel version lacks the
ability to read it. If so, you can upgrade your version to handle these
files with a free download from the Microsoft website.
It's also possible the file was corrupted in transmission, in which case you
need to get the sender to retransmit.
Not knowing your version of Office or your email client...........
Earlier versions of Outlook and Outlook Express required that Excel
attachments be sent in "Plain Text" rather than "rich text format"
If sent in RTF the files would open with the bunch of symbols showing.
