Under Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\<folder
name>, I found a couple files with extremely long names.
I could not move or remove those files. As I recall, Windows
complained about the length of the names. When I tried to
look at their Properties, Windows had another complaint -- I
think something to the effect that the properties could not be
found.
Eventually, those files did disappear. I might have succeeded
in removing the folder, then emptying the Recycle Bin. I do
not remember.
Can some MVP explain how such files could be created -- that
is, how Windows (through an application) can create a file that
it cannot access later -- and why I couldn't move or remove
those files?
I have "administrator" capability.
The existence of those files prevented me from deleting any of
the files selected with ctl-A (perhaps because those files were
first in the folder), and they interrupted copying an enclosing
folder (several steps removed) to another disk. I was just
lucky that I stumbled across the bogus files while I made every
effort to clean unwanted files in a desperate attempt to make
the folder copy work.
