Why can't I follow hyperlinks from within email?

I recently updated microsoft office using the online update process. Ever
since then, I am unable to access hyperlinks that are contained within
emails. When I click on one it takes me to a dialog box labeled "locate link
browser". This is true for both Outlook and Outlook Express.

I've tried everything I can think of... please help!
