I`got the newest Real Alternative AND the the newest RealPlayer (10)

but everytime I try to open a *.rm or *.ram file, there is just an
error message like "Windows has detected a major error..."

I dont get it, is it something about the codecs?

Could you post a more specific error message? If you get the option to send
an error report, go ahead and do so.

It could be there's some sort of conflict between the two players - I would
uninstall them both, restart then try reinstalling Real Alternative (I go
for the Mega Codec Pack - has RA as well as QuickTime Alternative and a
DivX player)

A fresh DL of WMP9 or 10 includes all necessary codecs. I recently
installed WMP9 and it grabbed associations for practically everything
'except' Real files. Media Player Classic v6484 retained ownership
of Real files. Real Alternative is designed to work with MPC. I don't
know if any other player would know where the Real Alt codecs are
located.

You would probably have to install one of the latest Real players
[heaven forbid], for WMP10 to be able to find the codecs and play .rm
etc. A file named keys.dat is added to the MPC dir which leads it to
Real Alt. Under MPC's View/Options/Formats, I have only Real Media file
checked off so that there is no conflict with my new WMP9 installation.
If you want real audio, it's there too and click dirct show below if
you wanting streaming capabilities from the web.

My choice for playing Real files was MPC. The latest v6484 is here:

I kave installed the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. I remember reading in the
directions that you need to uninstall RealPlayer if you want to install
Real Alternative.

That is assuming that it's possible to uninstall Real Player without
using a blowtorch or a hand grenade. Twice, before I knew better, I
removed it, (once along with the equally rotten Quick Time) by
reformatting my entire hard drive. The third time (after tracking over
5,000 changes it made when it installed!!!), I removed it with two
passes of the System Suite uninstaller, two passes with the usual
Install Shield/Microsoft method, plus assorted hand registry edits. My
computer has never been quite right since then.

Real is the only company that's even worse than AOL and Yahoo in their
contempt for the unsuspecting end user. Anyone disagree?

Please say more about the Mega Codec Pack -- what is it and why is it
good? Also, is being able to play Quick Time files useful?

Thanks.

About the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
http://www.codecguide.com/about_mega.htm

I find it handy as it has Real and QuickTime Alternative and a DivX player
in one. It can also play a wide range of other formats, more details of
which you can find on the link above.
I find being able to play QuickTime files useful for movie trailers etc.

Cheers

Can't disagree. My last Real install was v8.

268k IC5 record shows 992 keys, 1073 values, w/6 dlls in Win/sys
CLSID entries can't be located for hand removal without a record
like InControl5. CLSIDs are randomly generated by whoever wants one.
There is no requirement (or means) to report generation of a CLSID
to MS. In fact the whole thing is designed to not require a central
repositary.

Here's some of the worst I've run across for reg bloating:

MS Visual Studio = 32,230
Windows Media Player9 = 7,358
AVP antivirus = 2,000+
FixIt utilities = 1,440
MultiMedia JukeBox = 1,200
JExplorer = 1,000
Salamander file manager = 883

Add MS to AOL, Yahoo and Real.

Best advice is to use an uninstaller like TU and make your decision
on the spot so you can get everything removed 'automatically' without
the hand work.
