Why are tables converting to plain text and plain boxes?

PowerPoint tables (not MS Word inserted tables) are dismantelling into text
boxes with a colored square (previously the table background) behind the text
box when they are copied from one presentation to another. Both Versions of
PPT are PowerPoint 2000 SP-3.

How are you pasting them into the new presentation? It almost sounds as if
you've chosen WMF or EMF and then ungrouped.
