Why are PDF attachments zipped?

I attach a PDF file to Outlook 2003 and it Zips it. I have a recipient that
cannot receive .Zip files as attachments

Darn -- I once knew why. When you find out where the setting is, it'll be
one of those "Why the heck there? Who would think that?"

That's because you have a program running in the background that is doing
the zipping. WinZip, for example, has this option. Outlook does not zip.
