Why are my unread e-mails disappearing

My outlook 2003 removes my unread e-mails after a day or so.
Is there some sort of time limit on this? Most of the mail are links to
world newscasts that I haven't had time to view. I checked the archives,
nothing there and nothing in the deleted box.
This is a new laptop and it only happens with outlook. On our other machine
using outlook express everything is fine?
