why are my pages not numbering properly as formatted?

Up to now have not had trouble with numbering pages for my Crochet Class that
I teach. Only now that I have begun another file for my next class, the
numbering is to start at -56- and continue in sequence for the next 4 pages.
I get -56- and -57-, then it repeats -56 and -57- instead of -58-, -59-.
This is quite frustrating as I have tried everything I could think of to
correct the problem. HELP.

Evidently you have restarted numbering at the beginning of a section
somewhere.

This indicates that there is at least one section break in the text, and
that page numbering is set to restart in some section. Switch to Normal
(Draft) view; that way, you will be able to see the section breaks more
easily and determine which section restarts the page numbers.

After you've located the correct section, display headers and footers and
then open the Page Number Format dialog box (by clicking the appropriate
button on the Header and Footer toolbar or on the Header & Footer Tools
ribbon, depending on your version of Word), where you should check the
"Continue from previous section" option.

Note that if a section is limited to part of a page (for example because it
is using a different number of text columns), you will have to temporarily
insert a page break before you can access the header and footer for that
section.

For more on page numbers, see

and footers, see http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm.
