Why are my documents read only?

I've got a peculiar thing happening in Word 2003. When I save a document and
re-open it, it is saying that it is read only. And yet I haven't set it as
read only and when I check the security options, read only isn't selected.

I'm using track changes on these particular documents but I can't see what
difference that would make. Can anyone help?

Any chance they are on a CD?

Then, check your file permissions for the folder that contains your
document. It is possible to set file permissions such that you can create a
file in a folder, but not edit that file.

I've checked file permissions, I think. I went to windows explorer, right
clicked on the folder and ensured that Read Only wasn't selected. Is this
what you mean by checking file permissions?

I guess so. Depends on OS. I don't have any other ideas.
