You don't mention the version of Word you are using but I believe this
problem is due to "Balloons" being activated in Track Changes dialog under
Tools, Options.
Change the "Use Balloons" to Never and hopefully this extra width should
disappear.
These instructions are for 2003 and prior, 2007 may be slightly different.
