why am i unable to edit a document

student new to ms office

i edited a document once and tried to go in to it again and finish at a later
time but was unable to.. can anyone help me out with this problem?
 
Please describe what happens when you try, what version of Word you
have, and whether it's fully paid for and activated (or an expired
trial version).
