Why All The Vista Versions

G

Guest

Hello to all,

What's up with all the Vista versions. So far, I've heard of Vista Home
Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, etc. Just how many versions of
Vista are there and what's the difference between them?

Is all these flavors of Vista really neccessary. I mean, was there really
so much difference between Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro that they had
to be split into two seperate versions?

Since I have no better things to do at this moment, I will jump in.

If you count 32 bit and 64 bit for each edition, you have more flavors.

In my truly humble opinion, I think if it comes with only two consumer
versions (excluding business license types), such as Home Basic and
Ultimate, and lower its price by certain percentage, it will knock down
everybody till the end of world.

But what do I know :)

Hmm... What's up with all the ubuntu versions? Ubuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu,
xubuntu? Are they really necessary?

No they are not. But at least the differences are a lot clearer to the
average user, basically boiling down to whatever desktop someone prefers
visually. =)

Everyone,

Thanks to all for the input. After I checked out the various Vista flavors
submitted by John, the logical thing to do is to upgrade to the Ultimate
version and call it a day. BTW, are any of you responders using Vista
Ultimate right now and if so what's your opinion about it. Is it worth it to
upgrade?

I went ahead and did the Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate (mostly because the
computer was a gift and I still had some spending room), but there's not a
whole lot to back that up - yet. I am hoping that sometime down the road
they'll keep adding some really good stuff into the Extras that come with
Ultimate, and I'll be grateful that I did it... but for now, the eye-candy
of Dreamscapes is absolutely fun to mess with, but other than that...

If you bother to pay attention to the things I've posted (and I don't expect
you to, but just in case you reconize me from earlier posts), you know that
I'm a staunch defender of Vista. but I have to agree with you that I think
MS came up with too many versions of Vista. As a result, I think this has
fostered confusion and animosity.

The confusion should be self-evident. I don't think I could name all the
Vista versions and what their differences are.

As for the animosity, I think I would be pissed if I bought the lowest-grade
version of Vista and found that it couldn't do all the stuff I expected it
to do because I'd read all the hype.

I hope that soon, MS seriously considers reducing the number of versions to
just two or three.

As for the question below (yes, alas, I top-posted): I'm using Vista
Ultimate 64-bit. I guess it doesn't get any higher than that. I've been
quite happy with it. I don't have a lot of exotic devices, so drivers have
not been an issue for me. My machine is less than two years old, so it's
probably more up-to-date than the average home user's.

Since I haven't tried Vista on any machine other than my own, I can only
speculate on this. But I think people need to take a serious look at their
hardware before considering an upgrade to Vista. I have a dual-core 64-bit
Athlon processor, 2 gigs of ram and a GeForce 6600 vid-card. Certainly there
are many machines a lot more powerful than mine; but there probably twice as
many that are not as powerful as mine. The bottom line is that my good
experience with Vista may have a lot to do with how powerful my machine is.

(Meanwhile, I'm thinking of upgrading to a dual-core Opteron since my
motherboard is a socket 939 and they won't be selling processors for it much
longer.)

And as to price, I bought an OEM version from New Egg for $199. Had I been
forced to buy a retail version for twice the cost, I might not have done so.

DP,

Amen to Microsoft reducing the number of Vista versions. As you stated in
your comprehensive reply all those Vista versions are confusing. I think at
some point though I'll upgrade to Vista Ultimate 64-bit simply because I want
to have the most robust Microsoft OS available.

I just purchased a new system just so I could see what all the Vista hype is
about. I don't think Vista is as well recieved with the public as XP and
Win98 was. I remember when Windows 98 first hit the market their was a
buying frenzy with people standing in lines for hours waiting for the store
to open. None of that has happened with the release of Vista although the
current economy may be a factor too.

Anyway, thanks for your reply DP. Your opinion is greatly appreciated and
valued.

Well, I'd have to comment that's your perseption... that they're a lot
clearer to the average user. What exactly is the "average user"? I thought
edubuntu was a scaled down version for the education market. Not claiming my
perception is any clearer than yours...

I see that you've reviewed others responses. What I have not seen, and that
could very well be a lack on my part, is just exactly what it is you want to
do with Vista. I mean, geez, I'm really surprised that after all the months
of your (not you're) posting in this ng you'd come out with this kind of
super basic query. What's up with that? You dis Vista unceasingly then bust
out with "what's the difference between Vista versions? Holy crap... c'mon!

I've said it before... I'll say it again... I'm not a vista boi... not an MS
apologist... don't dis Linux in this ng, don't recommend folks move to Vista
out of hand, yet... others, like yourself, seem to think that anyone that
points out that their (yeah, not there, or they're) posts are troll-like in
nature is a vista boi, MS apologist, anti-nix scab. Hmm...

It has nothing to do with Vista. You made it so. And now you're (not your)
asking about the difference between Vista versions.

OK... I'm running Ultimate on two PC's. What do you want to know?

Normally when I see those Mac/PC commercials on TeeVee, I am somewhere
between bemused and annoyed due to the Apple propensity to skew the truth.

But the latest commercial with the Vista wheel-o-fortune is dead on
accurate.

MS needs to produce 2 operating systems:
1 for all clients - from simple home users to high end techies
1 for servers (ok, maybe 2 for servers).

Hey Lang (Lank) Murphy,

Take your hostility elsewhere. My question was already answered by John
Inzer in a civilized manner. With your attitude I wouldn't want diddly from
you so don't bother posting to any of my questions anymore. What's your
problem anyway. Why do you even care about what I think and why do you take
it personally what I have to say about Vista. Your (not you're) acting as
though your name is Vista and I insulted you, moron. Go get a life.

Heh. An Alias isn't always the same Alias. Course, had you bothered to
read the headers you would have prevented yourself from putting your
