Is there a log that tells me who is logging in when on xp. Say i want to see
if some one is using my screen name while i'm not home. Is there a file that
tells me who is logging on at a specific time, and date.

Hi Daffy, easiest way to find out if someone logs on your account or pc in
general is check the event-viewer via start>control panel>performance &
Maintenance>administrative tools>event viewer

most actions on your computer are written as a log there, related to the
windows-account aswell, right-click on a section for example "system" ables
you to set how long windows shall save the logs untill over-writing them,
think 7 days is standard

hope that helped you^^

greetings
Edwin

Hi Edwin:

How can you tell about what daffy2000 is asking? I cannot figure
out into what others might be logging when on XP using daffy2000's
computer.

Hi Mark,

where Daffy wrote:

I assume he is asking wether he can see if anyone logs on to his Windows
account when he is not at home! The easiest way I find is to check my event
viewer > system log shows me specific actions made "date/time/and user
"myname" when/who performed the action.

Am I mistaken?

ps: as far as I know on WinXP home this should not be any different as from
Win XP Pro

kind regards
Edwin

Hi Edwin:

I do not know the answer to your question. The phrase, "screen
name", is associated with more than one type of Internet-related
application. It seems to me that daffy2000's issue is ambiguously
stated. If your assumption is correct, then maybe daffy2000 will
clarify whether or not they want to know how to tell when somebody
else logged into their XP account.

If you're running Windows XP Home Edition go to Start ->
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools and open up the Event
Viewer. In the left hand column, click on Security. In the
right hand pane, click on the User column. Scroll down to your
user name and look for successful Logon/Logoff events.

If you're running XP Professional, you'll have to enable
auditing of logon events. You can do that through the local
security policy. Once this is done you'll be able to view
future logon events in Event Viewer using the procedure
outlined above.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools and double
click on Local Security Policy.
In the Local Security Policy editor, navigate to this policy.

Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy

In the right hand pane, right click on Audit logon events.
Select Properties from the menu.
Put a check mark in the box next to both Success and Failure.
Click OK.

Why not just set a strong password on your user account and keep it to
yourself. Then you can be reasonably confifent that no one is using our
account.

The system Event logs will indicate when someone has logged in or out.
Right-click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer.

You're correct in that the original question was very poorly phrased,
and open to multiple interpretations. We see a great many such posts,
and rather than ignore them, we usually offer our best guess as to the
OP's intent, and answer accordingly. If the OP needs another answer,
he/she can rephrase the question and repost it.

(Of course, there are also times when we all say "Huh?" and ask the OP
to rephrase or post in a newsgroup dedicated to his/her native language.)

Those who assumed i was talking about the actual XP login were correct. I'm
sorry about the ambiguous description. I have gone into the event viewer and
found the log i needed. I thank you all for your time and answers.
