I use it, and have used it for years. Technically, this is off-topic
for *all* of the newsgroups you posted it to.

Hi, everybody! :)

I've used Pay-Pal for 5 years with never a problem.

It takes some time to get a new account fully opened and verified. It
can take a month or more, they mail you documents with passwords and
URL's that you have to use to verify that yes, you really did receive
the hard copy documents that they mailed to the address that you gave them.

You give them a credit card and (this used to be optional) bank account
information for doing direct withdrawls/deposits.

You have an account with them Pay-Pal itself, also.

When you pay someone (buy something on E-Bay, for example), the money
comes from your Pay-Pal account if there is a balance in the account,
otherwise from your bank account via direct withdrawl and/or from a
charge to your credit card. You have reasonable but not total control
over this.

When you receive money (sell something on E-Bay, for example), the money
goes into your Pay-Pal account. From there, you can have it
electronically direct deposited to your bank account, or you can have
them mail you a paper check (for which there is a small fee, in the USA
it's US $1.50).

Normally, a fee is only paid when you receive money, but it can be close
to 4%.

I use paypall, I don't have a creditcard so before I can buy..I need to send
money by bank to paypall, but ..happily that is nowadays more easy done then
ever.

I am sure that every bank supports it, after all, it's just sending money to
the bank account of paypall and adding a little number for recognition.

If you have a creditcard then it will pay it automaticly through it!

It's pretty easy actually, ... I would say..try it..you have nothing to
lose!

Well, paypal makes it MUCH easier to pay for things..no matter in what
country you life. ( and banks don't have that... )

And yes it might cost 4% ... for the money you get... but... it's about the
same scheme as some banks use.

And tell me, .. is truly using banks easier?

4% is only for premier accts, which you need if you want to ACCEPT credit
card payments to you, You dont need it if you are recieving funds from an
acct with funds already, or funded thru a bank acct.
Myself i have 2 paypal accts, one ordinary and one premier, if I am
getting paid from existing funds or bank acct funds I send it thru the
regular acct, otherwise credit card payments are thru the premier acct.

Be careful with PayPal -- I almost got scammed out of $800 selling a
Laptop on eBay. Somebody in Malaysia wanted to buy it, charged using their
credit card through PayPal. They wanted it shipped next day FedEx. I
almost shipped it, then I got an email from the REAL person on eBay saying
they never bid on it!!! The malaysian guy was a criminal, stole the eBay
user's ID and PayPal info. I would have been out the $800 since the buyer
was not a verified PayPal user-- shippping address did not match PayPal
verified address. PayPal works great, and you are protected, if you follow
the rules. Now I will never ship outside of the USA, and I will never ship
to any address that does not match the user's PayPal registered address.

There are lots of scary stories about PayPal on the net and I wouldn't
touch PayPal with a ten foot pole.

I started to sign up for a Pay Pal account, and aborted when they
wanted my bank account number. No way. If a valid credit card is not
enough, I will find another way to pay for purchases or just not buy
from anyone who requires a Pay Pal account.

And most of them FUD. As with anything, a bit of common sense goes a
long way to keeping things secure on the net, the scammers prey on
people without any. I have never had a problem with Paypal.

I mean, paypall is not much more dangerous ..as using your creditcard.

Paypal can be safe... can be safe.. if you act safe!

hey, I could sell you "common sense(TM)", it's 3rd hand but in great condition!

Well, they don't DEMAND to know your bank account information! It's or
creditcard or bank account..that easy :)

I my experience, Paypal is good if you're in the US, or if you're "overseas"
and only put money into it. My first account at Paypal got
deleted/confiscated when I tried to withdraw money from it (only had ~$US15
in it thankfully) due to "fraud detected" or somesuch. I can't remember
exactly (was about a year ago), but I do remember that they never clearly
explained why. This was after I'd jumped through the thousand or so hoops to
get my information verified so that I could actually withdraw money. And
yes, Paypal's customer support is every bit as bad as they say,
unfortunately ...

My second (current) account is working fine, though. Admittedly, I've never
tried putting money into it or taking money out (only paypal->paypal
trnasactions), though I wouldn't expect there to be any issues adding money
:) In NZ, they can't debit your bank account, so many of the horror stories
can't happen. I believe it's the same in Australia.

Well, my impression was that they DEMANDED a bank account number even
though I had already supplied a credit card number.

They used to not require both credit card and bank account information,
you could give them either one and that was sufficient. But I believe
that for anyone signing up today, they do require both. I'm not sure of
that, but that's my impression.

And my impression is that their privacy statement sucks.

Well, lots of other people have. Things like PayPal withholding *your*
money etc.

Make it a twenty-foot pole!

Following the rules does not protect you. One favourite scam is
bait and switch. As long as the sellers send you anything, Paypal will
automatically not honour any claim.

Ask your credit card company about any protection they offer when you
use Paypal.
Ask your local Police Fraud department about Paypal.

I cancelled my Paypal account when two sellers in a row ripped me off
by not sending what they sold. In both cases Paypal did not honour
their Buyer Protection Plan.

The only thing Paypal guarantees is that they will get a cut of the
action.
