Who makes Dell's LCD monitors?

I've heard good things about Dell's 19" LCD monitors (not so good on their
boxes) and I've seen a couple in freinds homes and like the quality of their
text on screen (an important criteria). It doesn't look like Dell will sell
the monitor only. Anyone know what the underlying brand and model is?

Could be mistaken but when I bought my 4100 several years ago I
researched that same question. At the time I think the manufaturer of
the 19" monitor I eventually bought was sony. Beautiful and rugid
monitor. It has the dampter wires, however, which you only notice after
someone tells you.

As to the boxes, I have found them pretty reliable and easy to work with
--to a point. If you go beyond the typical harddrive and video card
upgrades you tend to run into some propietary issues with their
motherboards, power supplies, etc. Support is realtive and over the
years it has gone downhill but so has that of all the major
manufacturers. That is why the two older computers in my house are dells
and the two new are I built myself.

Yes they will... my father in law bought the 19 inch UltraSharp LCD without
buying a computer. It's an amazing monitor. I have one at work.

That's a CRT - not an LCD.

Dells are great for people who aren't into tinkering. They are generally
very solid and very quiet and work out of the box at a reasonable price.

You just have to avoid some of the crappy peripherals they try to sell you
along with the computer. Their printer/scanner they try to bundle with the
computer is a piece of shit. I got one for free (an A920) because they
messed up one of my orders, and I can see why they are giving them away LOL
The printer I bought in 1998 did a better job than the A920. I brought it
into work and use it on my desk so I don't always have to walk to the
printer room, and it's better than nothing, but not much.

New words are being added to the language all the time, based on common
usage. This new one means "rigid and rugged."
It has the dampter wires

This one I'm not too sure about.

I've been under the impression - possibly mistaken - that Samsung
supplies Dell with 17" & 19" LCDs. Don't know where I heard / read
that. In any case, I'm satisfied with my 2 Dell 19" LCDs.

Sorry about the lcd/monitor mixup. I was on my way out the door to a
meeting and wanted to get a quick message out. After years of working in
video, I automatically associate tubes with the word monitor. But
seriously, the quality/price performance ratio delivered by the old 19"
bundled with my dell 4100 was outstanding. At the time I purchased the
dell monitor I had just returned a hitachi priced signficantly higher
and it had nowhere near the quality of the dell monitor. I think the old
dell is still doing duty with one of my son's gaming computers. I
currently have a samsung syncmaster lcd and although I like the extra
space I can't help but miss the crispness of the crt.
