White Space / Site Critique

G

Guest

I recently loaded a test version of my FrontPage site, and am not sure about
the background color - specifically whether it's best to have a lot of white
or if a deeper color is better. The person who did the design (header, logo,
etc.) told me how to leave the background white, as well as how to make it a
deep gradient burgandy / pink that matches the thin border that's up now.

Here is the site with the white background:
http://www.positivelyfeminine.org , and here is an example of the deeper
background color: http://www.kingland.us. I am fairly new to site design and
would appreciate any comments or advice you could give about this. Also, I
would appreciate if someone could explain to me exactly what is considered
"trapped white space" and if it is always a bad thing.

Note: Because the site is in the testing stage, some secondary pages may not
work. Right now I am concerned about the color situation.

Thanks!!

I like the dark background, it gives it a rich depth. Then again I may be
the only person who has any idea what I just said.

Maybe I'm just color blind, but they look almost identical.

kingland.us looks better to me

trapped white space is an island of white somewhere in the page that sucks
your eye to it..and looks like something is missing - sometimes it's
unavoidable though.

Well, you got a critique of a feminine site from a woman (experienced in web
design) who thought it was too heavy. Maybe other women feel the same.

As a (male) person I guess I do too

How about something a bit lighter, perhaps even the colour of the bar
containing Home | Contact | Back to top
This is #ed89c4, a much lighter puce (I think that's the description of this
colour)

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. It's interesting that the only woman to
reply was the one who didn't care for the dark background. Eleanor, what
would you suggest in place of the dark background? The white? I tried making
it a solid light pink, but it doesn't go well with the banner at the top.

Thank you!

BK:

Personally, I think the background color fits the theme of the site quite
well. The use of white space for the content balances it out.

I had three ladies take a look at the site to tell me what they thought.
Basically, they all agreed it was a very appealing site to them. Not one
mentioned anything about colors being bad or annoying.

FWIW.

Tom,

That's very interesting. Thank you so much for taking the time to get their
opinions and share them with me!

Hi Brenda,

I prefer the darker background as well...as does my wife. Usually I am
partial to white..but in your design I believe the extra color works well.

No matter which way you go..since web sites are never really finished..you
can always change your mind..isn't that a woman's prerogative? :)

My other half chose the white.
