White label HDs

L

Li'l ol' me

I have some obscurely badged drives that are clearly relabels are of brand
name models. I have some by somebody called 'magnetic data' (at least one
of which is a rebadged WD Caviar (I think, checked it last week)) and some
which ID themselves as 'Vanilla White Label [model number]' which MAY be
rebadged quantums. But some are more obscure again, and the WD one I
mentioned was regarded as 'too old' by the diag program I'm using (I think
it's 2 years old if that).

I'm having difficulty finding info on these and I particularly want to know
how to ID them and what diag tools to use with them.

Sometimes thats as basic as recognising the drive physically.

Quite a few drives do have rather unique physical details,
even if thats just the basic shape of the pcb, how the logic
card is attached to the drive frame and cables off the logic
card, and other basic stuff like the main ics used etc. Some
drives have different jumper styles, particularly WDs and IBMs.
and what diag tools to use with them.

Most of the basic diagnostics do report what the
drive returns to an identify command etc. Quite a
few like DTemp and HDD Health report quite a few
of the drive params and they may be recognisable.

Run a diagnostics/LLF too, it will identify the drive at least. I
wouldn't be worried about who the real manufacturer is, as the have
disowned the drive.

The "White Label" drive you're using is most likely a WD drive.
It's too old to use DLG tools 10.0, but have you tried DLG tools 2.8
diagnostic?
If the drive is still in working order DLG 2.8 should pick it up and
identify it.
