Which would be better and why?

I'll admit I'm still a bit hazy on dual channel RAM. There must be something on
line that explains it in detail, but I've had no luck finding it.

Which would be better, assuming no differences except configuration: a P4 with
HT and 1GB of RAM (two identical 512MB sticks) in a single channel or the same
P4 with one 512MB stick in each channel? Why?

My main concern is whether I'd need to double the amount of RAM to get any real
benefit if I move to hyperthreading on a dual-channel motherboard.

Thanks for any info or for a link to something that explains dual channels
completely.

Like most things..It depends on the application.
Photoshop would probably run quicker with the 1G,
some games will run faster on the dual channel.

Both configurations will give you 1 GB of useable RAM. But, assuming you
are using IDENTICAL MATCHED 512 MB sticks of DDR RAM, by using one in each
channel you double the available bandwidth of the RAM. So it runs
significantly faster.

1) They do not need to be identically matched.
2) The difference, in performance, between single and dual channel mode is
insignificant in real-world use.
3) The only reason that I have not killfiled you, is so that I may jump in
and correct your misinformation (that you seem to spew, on a daily basis).
I'd hate to think how some people would waste money, time, and possibly
damage something by taking your crap seriously.

True

Not my experience.

Why bother?

How do you damage a system buy using the ram in dual channel mode?

Yours, and mine, differ.

Because I'm a geek.

That was not my point. He's blatantly given false information, on
everything under the Sun. I was not refering to RAM.
