Hello DickG,
Well first of all is your hard drive partitioned with just one partition?
If so then you can boot up then go to the root of your C:\ (or whatever
you local drive number is) and look for the boot.ini file. If it isn't
there then you will need to go to tools - Folder options - View. From here
click the show hidden files and folders button then uncheck the Hide
Extentions for known file types and Hide protected operating system files.
You will get a Message stating..
You have chosen to display protected operating system files (files labeled
System and Hidden) in Windows Explorer.
These files are requires to start and run Windows. Deleting or editing
them can make your computer become inoperable.
Are you sure you want to display these files.
Click Yes then OK.
Now look for the boot.ini file again. Double click it and it should open
in notepad. Now if you look under Default you will see the path of the
operating system that you are booting to. If there are multiple paths
under the heading operating systems then you should be able to change the
timeout= value to like 30 so you have time to choose which O/S you want to
boot to.
I hope this helps ...

| I had a crash and was unable to boot so I installed a 2nd
| copy of Windows XP which I labeled Windows1. After
| booting I reinstalled or moved all the software and data.
| Everything is working OK but I need to get rid of the
| junk I created. I do not know which version of Windows
| is being used, the original 'Windows' or Windows1' so I
| don't know what to remove. If I rename the wrong one and
| it won't boot I don't know how to proceed at that point.
| I know how to use the tools to repair the system but I
| would like help on what procedure to follow.
|
| Thanks.
