A Boot partition is one that is made bootable.

Primary,Extended, System, Boot?

There are only 2 types of usable partitions for personal file storage.
Primary and logical in the MS world. Whether the primary partition is
active (system partition) or not is immaterial.
Whether the partition (XP boot partition) contains the windows folder and
corresponding files is immaterial.
An extended partition is a container for logical drives (partitions). An
extended partition has no asset for a filesystem, therefore, cannot contain
files.

I'm not sure what you define as "Basic Storage".

Believe John means that logical drives (partitions) can be made within an
extended partition. A divided extended partition occupied space into
multiple extended ones are useless as is. An extended partition is a
standalone entity.
