Ive been looking at getting a 500 GB hard drive. The question is which
Brand should I get?

Ive looked at the reviews at TomsHardware.com and AnandTech.com to try
to make up my mind. I think the only thing Ive accomplished is getting
more confused.

Ive been looking at Western Digital, Hitachi, and Seagate.

Im going for SATA II Hard Drive with NCQ and 16 MB Cache.

These are the two sites I looked at to try to make up my mind.

Anandtech Article:
Hitachi vs. Western Digital vs. Seagate: A Battle of the Mammoths

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Depending which site you look at Western Digital or Hitachi come out
on top as far as performance. Western Digital appears to get the noise
award for being the noisiest drive. Hitachi gets the award for being
the hottest drive but the least noisiest. Seagate seems to trail in
performance but doesnt run as hot and is in the middle for noise.

Im leaning towards Seagate, because I dont like noisy drives and Im
concerned about having a drive that runs hot. The Hitachi HDD runs
around 50+ celsius on average.

Id be interested to see what others think, especially people who have
one of these HDD's.

TIA

Hitachi has tentatively announced recently that they will be exiting the
harddrive business later this year.

Hitachi's leaving the show! WOW!

Thanks for the heads-up DaveW. I appreciate it.

I seem to remember that Western Digital had some manufacturing glitch
as far as onboard thermal sensor issues. Thats why they drastically
reduced the prices I think it was on their 250 GB drive.

Even though Im a performance junkie, Im willing to forgo perfermance
for known reliability. Looks like Seagate is going to be my ticket,
unless something better comes along.

Have you considered Samsung:

FWIW I've had very good luck w/ Samsung drives over the past three years.
Not always the speediest,
but (for me) they've been reliable and quiet.

There are also the Chinese hard drives. You could try a Feihong Industry
drive, or a Shenzhen Wanlongxing Electron Science drive.
