Which kinds of images can be Recolored?

I understand that some clipart that is inserted into a PowerPoint slide can
be recolored. Bitmaps are not one of these. Can someone tell me which image
file types can be recolored and which types cannot? Thanks!

WMFs and EMFs can be recolored.
BMP, JPG, PNG, TIF and GIF (those are probably the most popular image
formats) cannot.

I'm not 100% positive about GIFs, but I tried both an animated and
non-animated one here, and neither could be recolored, so that's my story
and I'm stickin' to it. :)
