Terry

I had Java on my machine.

I could not get a Java page to work. I went to Java's page and there
are more than one choice.

I picked Java SE and the web page still did not work. I tried the web
page on another computer and the page works fine.

I have uninstalled Java and would like to know which version I should
use for just casual web surfing.

This is the web page I am trying to access

Uninstall the JAVA from Add/Remove programs. Go to :
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp and follow the steps.

You are point to an OLDER version of JRE, v5 update 9.

V5 update 10 is suggested !
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Is this confusing ? Y E S !

Blame Sun because they are all fuc..., err, screwed up !

I forget, does one need to uninstall update 9 before downloading and
installing 10?

Terry,

For a long time I could not get Java to work on one of my computers at home.
Everything I tried would not solve the problem. Uninstalling Java and
reinstalling it from the Sun site would not fix the problem. Trying
different option settings in IE would not help. The thing that finally
fixed the problem was downloading Microsoft JVM from the following site.
The link was given to my by one of the MVP's on this forum. Hope this
helps.

Yes. However, if you reboot the pc after uninstalling the old v of Java,
the folder will be gone. I always reboot as a matter of making sure it's
clean.

BTW, Java's JRE v 6 is now out.

Well, that saved me a step :-)

Just visited the Java site and it is still offering Version 5 update 9.
However, I notice that there is a link to "Newer" versions. Why doesn't the
site offer the new Version 6 by default. Is it still beta?
Also, if I do download it, should I uninstall version 5 first?

Why - ask Sun. No, version 6 is no longer in beta. Yes, uninstall all
previous versions.

I find version 6 to be a bit faster than the previous versions.
