Which Firewall Is Best?

AJ

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a third-party firewall for my computer. Some of you
have mentioned, in previous posts, ZoneAlarm and Sygate. They're both free,
right? I'm wondering, which firewall would you all recommend?
Also, has anyone used the Norton Personal Firewall?

Here is my suggestion:

Norton Internet Security 2003
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/nis_pe/

-- Includes Norton AntiVirus 2003
-- Includes Norton Personal Firewall
-- Includes prevention of annoying web pop-ups
-- Includes Parental Controls
-- All in one, easy-to-install & manage package

The problem with questions like this is that we don't *all* recommend the same thing. So you tend to end up as confused as when you begin.

That said, *I* recommend the free version of ZoneAlarm.

And I recommend the free version of Sygate!!!

Seriously though, if it's a free version you're after,
Sygate or ZoneAlarm will do the job for you.

Greetings --

Personally, I've been very happy with Symantec's Norton Internet
Security 2002 (NIS 2003 is now available), which includes Norton
AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall, parental controls, privacy
controls, and ad blocking. (Just the elimination of many of the
pop-up ads on the Internet made the price worth-while to me.)

Greetings --

ZoneAlarm is superior to WinXP's built-in firewall because it is
more configurable and monitors out-going traffic.

How does free ZA compare to the free XP firewall?

Bill:

Run both.
ICF (XP's f/w):
Is for inbound control only.
Is a stateful packet filter, and, if IIRC, can catch some source address
spoofing.

ZA free:
Is for inbound and outbound control.
Is an application gate for outbound, and is a packet filter for inbound.

I use the Norton Firewall available in Nortons Internet Security 2003
package. Works fine.

I believe that everyone has different tastes for different
things, so what I would suggest is to try some firewalls
out and see which one you would prefer.
Even if it's one that you would pay for, they usually give
you a 30 - day free trial.
Pick something you like.....;)
