Which DVI cable: M to M or M to F

Waiting for my new FP monitor (viewsonicvx910) and ati X700 Pro to come.
Anyone know which dvi cable I would need ahead of time. A male to male DVI
or male to female DVI?

would be used as an extension. A trickier part is whether you need dual

Believe you will get a cable with the monitor. My Samsung came with both
types of cables

(18 pin) cable. When would you need a dual link?

A dual-link cable is needed when a single TMDS channel cannot achieve the
data transfer rate needed for extreme resolutions (e.g. 2560x1600 for the
30" Apple panels).

If your LCD came with a single-link cable, then that's all it needs.
Besides, I'm not aware of any consumer PC video card with a dual-link DVI
port.

BTW, for Macs, nVidia has a Geforce 6800 DDL card with *two* dual-link DVI
ports. The extra circuitry makes the card as large as a Voodoo5 6000...

Many devices can physically use a dual-link cable, but the extra pins
are just not connected to anything internally.

I have a DVI KVM switch and the video didn't seem to work well with the
18-pin cables... that's why I asking. So, even though the monitor came with
an 18-pin cable, I'm now thinking that this switch may work better if I use
24 pin cables from the LCD and to the computer video cards.

The DVI interface has an extremely high data transfer rate: 1.65 GB/sec. To
put things in perspective, back in the Pentium II days, your CPU had a
slower connection to the RAM.

KVM switches, poor-quality cables, extension cables, etc. all cause signal
degradation and thus shouldn't be used with DVI.

And no, the extra lines in a 24-pin DVI cable don't act as "shielding" like
ATA/66 cables.
