Which cat for 7500?

I can no longer capture with MMC v8.7 on this XP Pro system W/AIW 7500.
System locks and cannot get out of capture mode. I have tried the obvious
defrag large drive with 60Gigs free. Close all running apps. Update to Cat
5.2 w/6.14.10.6512 did no good and now I am wondering if this was a good
idea. I am still a bit confused as how to upgrade properly. It says to
install WMD first but does this apply if you already have this installed
from the previous install of last cat upgrade or does this apply to first
time installations? Then in the notes section across from download window
it states that this is for 9000 and above. Which brings me to the actual
question which is- is there a last cat version that should be used for this
ATI AIW 7500 and no newer version be compatible or can I just keep on
upgrading like usual? Now on to my capture lockup problem.

As fas as I'm concerned, ATI's video capture has always been a screw around.
It seems way to "tied" into a specific version of the driver and seeing as
the driver always seems to need something "else" installed also it just
becomes a big nightmare if/when it doesn't go according to plan.

Next time I get a capture card it will certainly not be one that's bundled
into a video card. For that matter, I doubt it'll be anything by ATI.

I wonder if things will ever change. The good news is I got my problems
fixed. Nothing to do with what I thought it was and how the setup I had was
lost is a mystery. For the record the capture lockup I mentioned with MMC
was first noticed by the indication that I had no time(Zeros) indicating
capture time available on disk. I changed from D: drive to C: and back to D:
which originally had plenty of space. This must have refreshed the drive as
there was now an indication of time available on drive. Low and behold
capture feature had been restored.

I use MMC 8.1 (Catalyst 3.2), not because later versions don't work,
but because it is the last version that captures the video well. With
more recent versions, there are black bars to the left and right edges
of the video.

Is that the only thing you noticed? I never capture any serious clips with
MMC so I never noticed.

I've noticed that MMC 8.1 has a problem with uncommanded zooming of TV
Windows though. If you're recording something and you maximise / minimise /
fullscreen the program, often it will zoom to the top left corner of the
screen and this cant be fixed without restarting MMC. That was a pretty
significant bug for me (and I commonly encountered it) so I now use MMC 9.02
and Catalyst 3.10 for my 2 AIW Radeon 32 MBs (the predecessor to the 7500
card) and Radeon 8500DV and this combo works fine. I'm surprised if you've
not encountered this unwanted zooming bug. I wouldn't recommend MMC 8.1 to
people because of the bug. ATI did recognise it as a fault with MMC 8.1 and
eventually* fixed it in newer versions (*it wasn't until a few versions
later though).

I have never seen this, because once recording starts, I don't touch
the program.
