I prefer the avast ( free home edition ) which gives audio and visual
notification of (intended) suspects .

I have been using the AVG Free since April 2005 along with Windows XP sp2
firewall. I also have AVG Anti-spyware (free version) and Anti-rootkit
installed (also free). Start with AVG Free and if it does not meet your
needs try another alternative.
