Which are the absolute best programs to Repair and Rescue a corrupted unbootable Hard Drive?

After a crash, Partition Magic cannot identify either of my 2
)XP installed) partitions on the primary drive. Unknown and Errors.

In the mean time, how can I restore the Windows XP boot record?

Partition Magic can locate "Errors" by clicking the Info option.
However, it doesn't have any repair capabilities. Normally, it
will report "Improperly dismounted Partitions" and the like as
the program starts. It is still best to use the XP Chkdsk utility.
The alternate solution is your hard drive vendor. Most all of
them provide diagnostic tools to run on their products. Some
will actually create the RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization)
materials, if the drive is deemed defective.
These programs (SeaTools (Seagate)) etc are normally run
from a Dos-Boot floppy.
