Where's this password coming from?

When I'm dialling up, the computer asks for my password. If I check the 'save password' box, it doesn't save the password I type in - instead, when I next dial up, it comes up with something else (I can't see what of course) that's wrong. I've also tried changing the password in the 'Connections' section of the 'Internet Properties' box that comes up if you choose 'settings' from the 'Dial Up Connections' box: but once I've typed in the password and selected OK, as soon as I go back into the same page, my password has gone and the computer's version is there instead. Where is the computer getting its guess from and how can I change it so that my password is the one it offers up automatically? Many thanks.
 
It is your password. Why don't you think it is. All passwords show with a different number of characters to that entered..
