There was a mention, I think, on the MSDN or TechNet blogs (I saw it
paraphrased on a news blog) basically saying it will not change and
that they are in the process of fixing the incompatibility issue. If I
come across it, I will follow up.

The full text is as follows:

"In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between
Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both Windows XP SP3
and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers
have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web.

To help protect customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to
prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running
Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release
Windows XP SP3 to the web.

We are also testing a fix, and will make it available once that process is
complete. Once they have installed the fix, Microsoft Dynamics RMS
customers should be able to run both service packs.

Until then, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install
either service pack. Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP
SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support
Services for additional information."

This means [from third paragraph] that Build 5512 will change but a filter
will also be in place on MS website so that both SPs works even on systems
which has Microsoft dynamics installed.

customers should be able to run both service packs.

The *fix* being separate from the service pack, which will not change.

No it doesn't. It means that there will be a patch for Microsoft Dynamics
RMS.

Note (from your quote): "Once they have installed the fix, Microsoft
Dynamics RMS
customers should be able to run both service packs."

No change is being made either to XP SP3 or Vista SP1. The fix is to the
RMS package.

"BOTH SERVICE PACKS" could also mean that a new service will be issued (probably
5516) to fix whatever is wrong with the old one. I have never come across a
hotfix being labeled as a SERVICE PACK. What is required is a hotfix to correct
a minor conflict problem but why would MS call it a service pack? Could it be
that it will be a major correction patch?

I guess we have to wait and see.

You're all mixed up. MS is not calling any fix for the issue a service
pack.

Once a service pack is released to manufacturing (which SP3 has been) any
subsequent fixes are issued as updates to the OS at the currently supported
service pack levels or to a program.

<QP>
5512 is the final build.
If you've obtained 5512 from MSDN/TechNet, you have the final build.
5512 is what will go on Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center.
The Microsoft Dynamics RMS issue will be fixed via a seperate hotfix.
