Where is my normal.dot?

I try to use Microsoft Word 2003 since a few days now. One of the first
things I tried to do was customize my normal.dot, especially certain keys and
my toolbars. I first changed my user templates file location to c:\program
files\microsoft office\templates instead of the default directory. Then I
tried creating a simple new toolbar with the buttons which I use most often.
As long as my Word session is open, there is no problem and I can use my new
toolbar. As soon as I end my Word session and / or shut down my computer;
start it (the next morning) my toolbar has disappeared, as have any settings
that I have changed in Word such as default font.
It seemed logical to me that I would need to find the latest version of my
normal.dot since this is where the changes are made. However, if I check my
user templates directory, I do not find my normal.dot there. Neither do I
find it in the original location C:\Documents and Settings\lfn\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates.
The normal.dot does simply not appear to exist. I work on a very new
computer, the operating system installed is XP and my computer is part of a
small network.

Thank you for your reply.
I have indeed Acrobat 7 installed, and have gotten confirmed that this is
most probably the cause of the problem.

Wrong place for your user templates! That is the installed templates
location, and not where you want your user templates. Generally they are
kept in a user profile location.

Normal.dot is saved in that folder, though.

If you have Adobe Acrobat 7.0, it prevents changes to normal.dot.
From the FAQ:

28. I can't save my customizations - AutoText, menus, etc.
Can't save normal.dot...
If you have Adobe Acrobat 7 installed see the last section of
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm.
Otherwise, hold down the Shift key when selecting the File
menu and select Save All.

Finally, you may need to turn on the folder view option (in Windows) to see
hidden and system files to be able to see normal.dot.
