Where is my icon?

Hi all,
I work in a middle school. We run an NT4 sp6a server with
Win2k clients. On most of the computers, (not all) if we
install any application on a given computer under
Administrator, of the computer and domain, install the
program, either create a shortcut on desktop or right into
the "All Users" desktop folder, log on as anyone else, the
icon is not there. As a matter a fact all of the icons in
the All users desktop folder that were working before do
not show up on any other login. On some computers it works
fine though.....The icons in the desktop folder under "All
Users" show up no matter who logs in. There have been no
changes to the network recently. This has been getting
progressively worse.
Am I missing something?

Thanks
GP

Run regedt32.exe then have a look in;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
and check the Reg_Expand_Sz
"Common Desktop"="%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop"

That is definately the spot. But when I create a new
string value it comes up as "REG_SZ" instead
of "REG_EXPAND_SZ", like the existing ones. If I let it go
like that, it does not work. I just get an error message
at logon saying, cannot access folder, path is too long.
If I modify an existing REG_EXPAND_SZ, to say Desktop, it
works like a charm.

1. How do I create an "EXPAND" string?

2. Any idea why these values exist on some computers and
not on others? All computers were installed at the same
time by the same person and are all Dell GX110. They have
benn working fine for 1 1/2 years then all of a sudden
they are dropping one by one.

Thanks

1.) You must use regedt32.exe
2.) Registry corruption for one reason or another.
